Developing an industry-wide risk report

In his opening remarks, Le Thanh Tung emphasized that developing a comprehensive risk trends report for Vietnam’s banking sector is one of the key initiatives in the Risk Committee’s 2026 work program.

Globally, many banks and financial institutions regularly publish annual reports on emerging risks and industry risk trends to support strategic risk management and policy planning. However, in Vietnam, such systematic and industry-wide reports remain limited.

The idea of producing this report was first proposed by Dr. Nguyen Quoc Hung during the Risk Committee’s planning meeting in the fourth quarter of 2025. The report is expected to be published on an annual basis, providing forward-looking insights into major risk trends affecting the Vietnamese banking system.

KPMG presents survey methodology and implementation plan

At the meeting, Pham Do Nhat Vinh from KPMG introduced the proposed methodology for conducting the survey and preparing the report, drawing on KPMG’s experience in implementing similar global studies.

According to the proposal, the survey will focus on several key aspects of risk management within the banking sector, including:

  • Banks’ preparedness in risk management

  • Emerging risks in the financial and banking industry

  • The role of technology in risk management

  • Challenges arising from global economic and geopolitical developments

KPMG also outlined the proposed research framework, survey methodology, target participants, and the roles and responsibilities of the participating organizations in the preparation of the report.

Toward a reference report for the banking sector

Participants at the meeting expressed strong support for the cooperation between VNBA and KPMG in developing the report. The industry-wide survey is expected to:

  • Provide a comprehensive overview of risk exposure across Vietnam’s banking system

  • Support banks in strengthening their risk management frameworks

  • Offer valuable data for regulators and policymakers

Once completed, the Vietnam Banking risk Report is expected to become an important reference document for financial institutions, regulators, and policymakers, thereby contributing to greater transparency and stronger risk governance across the Vietnamese banking sector.
