SBV warns about imposter scams with phishing links to update biometric information

Recently, the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) has received reports about imposters pretending to be the SBV, faking the SBV's email interface to send information to lure people and customers to click on phishing links to update their biometric information used for banking transactions.

To gain the trust of the email recipients, the imposters often cite some regulations as stipulated in Decision No. 2345/QD-NHNN dated December 18, 2023 issued by the SBV on the measures to ensure the safety and security in online payments and bankcard payments, and request the recipients to update their biometric information via the phishing links provided in the emails. Specifically, the fake email address is “no-reply@sbvgov.site”, which sends phishing information together with 02 links to update biometric information, and requesting the recipients to update before August 30, 2024; as well as the full text of Decision No. 2345/QD-NHNN (attached to the fake email).

The SBV confirms that those are imposter scams pretending to be the SBV to collect the customers’ personal information. Specifically, by luring the recipients to click on the fake links to download and install an application to update their biometric information, but in fact, it is to download a file containing a malware, or a spyware to exploit the customers’ information to take control of their personal devices and bank accounts, or stealing the personal information and data of the victims to commit illegal acts.

Currently, the SBV only provides official information to the public through the SBV’s e-Portal at: https://www.sbv.gov.vn. The SBV does not send emails directly to any customers of any credit institution requesting them to update their biometric information.

The SBV recommends that all people and customers of the credit institutions develop their vigilance, not click on any strange links sent via chat, SMS or email. Customers should not provide their personal information to any unknown websites, nor provide their one-time passwords (OTP codes), passwords for electronic banking/mobile banking applications (internet banking/mobile banking), etc. to anyone, including the banks’ staff. All people should be extremely careful and vigilant when receiving and processing information and requests from any unofficial or unidentified information channels.
